AS Cagayan de Oro City’s Covid-19 cases breached the 30 case mark yesterday, Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy reminded barangay officials to fully support the City Health Office (CHO) vaccination campaign that will be extended anew on weekends and conducted door-to-door to every household.

“We expected the cases to go up since last July because of the series of face-to-face graduation events held in the city…(due to the improving numbers) we have become relaxed and as we pose for photos during graduations, we remove our face masks (increasing our chances of infection),” said CHO chief Dr. Rachel Dilla during Monday morning’s Covid-19 press briefing.

Based on CHO’s data, Cagayan de Oro City logged 32 new cases and 23 recoveries as of 10 pm on Aug. 2.

The city’s active Covid-19 cases went up to 142 with 46 patients admitted to the city’s private and public hospitals and 95 admitted to the city’s isolation facilities.

This came as City Hall mobilized support from the city’s barangays for their vaccination campaign.

Dr. Dilla confirmed that Dr. Ina Grace Chiu, CHO medical immunization coordinator, will meet with barangay officials to secure their support for the city’s vaccination program.

Dr. Chiu met with Mayor Uy who called on barangay officials for their support during the Liga ng mga Barangay meeting that opened on Tuesday.

Dr. Chiu reminded barangay officials of the mandate given by the national government requiring all local governments across the country to vaccinate 90 percent of their senior citizens, including their two booster shots, and 50 percent of the general population to include the first booster shot.

The mandate as issued by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. should be completed within 100 days, Dr. Chiu said.

As of late last month, Dr. Chiu said the city vaccinated more than 80 percent of its senior residents.

“Though our vaccination of the city’s population is high (compared to our neighbors in northern Mindanao), our resistance to the virus wanes over time so we need to secure our two booster shots (four months apart)..so the public is advised to get vaccinated at our designated venues. We will soon open a vaccination venue at SM CDO Downtown Premier on Saturdays,” Dr. Dilla said. (Stephen Capillas with a report from Archie Pagayaman of City Information Office)
