GUEST local government teams Cagayan de Oro, Gingoog, and Libertad remain as the participating local governments with teams that have still unbeaten marks in the ongoing 2023 Paglaum Cup volleyball tournament.

Last Thursday, the CDO Gold spikers were relentless in their out-of-town campaign as they won all their matches for men and women categories in the District 2 rivalries hosted by the municipality of Initao.

Reinforced by commercial cager Richard Kwong, the CDO Gold posted a league-leading 8-0 record in the men’s division after dominating two matches in Barangay Gimampang covered court.

Tailing them in second place is the town of Libertad at 6-0, followed by El Salvador City and Naawan with 5-2 and 4-3 win-loss slates, respectively.

In the women’s matches played over at the nearby Barangay Pagahan covered court, the CDO Gold powered by former Pilgrim Christian College varsity player Angela Compledo is also undefeated to take the solo lead at 6-0.

In the second spot is Alubijid at 6-1 with Gitagum (5-2) and host Initao (4-3) occupying third and fourth places.

Maayo among lakaw sa District 2. Unta ma-sustain sa playoff kay bug-at ang lalake nga team sa Libertad unya naa pa ang taga District 1,” Cagayan de Oro City sports coordinator Romarey Gorro told Gold Star Daily.

The District 1 hostilities proved to be the vantage point of the proud host Gingoog-LGU that it never dropped a single match on last Friday’s skirmishes all played at the spacious covered courts cum Evacuation Center of the seaside Barangay Daan Lungsod.

At 7-0, the Gingoog Skyscrapers were only up however by one game over the second-running and fellow unbeaten CDO Green (6-0) in the top four alongside Magsaysay (5-2) and Provincial Capitol (4-2) in men’s division.

Gingoog is also leading the women’s bracket at 6-0, followed by the CDO Green (6-1), Provincial Capitol (5-1), and Magsaysay (4-2).

It was like hitting the lottery when the Gingoog smashers bested the Provincial Capitol in two-straight sets, 25-15, 30-28 before their home fans who lustily celebrated with them.

The Capitol boys threatened to even up in the long-contested second set. But uncontested killer spikes from Cymond Jansol, Loui Tubo, and Juzzy Orillo with the help of setter Richard Maceda Jr, Ardy Braga, and Kyle Baguiz had settled the issue for good.

The Gingoog’s frontman the 24-year-old and 5-foot-10 Jansol is actually a basketball player. Jansol also led Gingoog in winning the 2022 PYAP basketball tournament then hosted by the Provincial Capitol at the Misamis Oriental Integrated Sports Complex in Cagayan de Oro late last year.

Provincial Sports Executive Director Efren Pollentes and Provincial Sports Coordinator Francis Sean Condeza said Misamis Oriental Governor Peter ‘Sr Pedro’ Unabia had approved the allocation of more than P100,000 in total cash prizes for the volleyball tourney, serving as a major sports highlight of the 10th Kuyamis Festival and 1st Paglaum MisOr Rise-CDO Cup.
