IF need be and should there be any call for it, the City Housing and Urban Development Department (Chudd) is willing to submit an inventory of socialized housing projects in the city.

“We’re going to do that (inventory), we will participate, we will cooperate, we will conduct an inventory. We have a ready list, we have a master list showing the number of housing units given to the qualified beneficiaries, we’ll be ready to provide it, and if (there are any irregularities) we’re willing to help in the investigation,” said Chudd chief Samuel Rollo in an interview.

Rollo referred to an ongoing Chudd investigation into the city’s 75 resettlement sites amid reports that some City Hall workers supposedly allocated housing units for themselves or their relatives.

The Chudd investigation gained support from City Councilor Edgar Cabanlas, who said the inquiry should have been done ‘a long time ago.’

“Yes, I support the investigation (to verify these allegations) and to (penalize those who violated the conditions of the housing program)…by getting to the bottom of this, we can enact legislation that will ensure that such irregularities won’t happen again,” said Councilor Cabanlas, who chairs the 20th City Council committees on urban poor as well as subdivisions and landed estate.

Cabanlas said he heard reports that some housing units are occupied by more than one family contrary to a condition in the city’s social housing program that only one housing unit is given per family.

“There are many qualified beneficiaries who are asking for housing units and sadly some of these units are occupied by (unqualified) beneficiaries whose names aren’t even on our lists,” Rollo said.

Rollo said they’re still compiling evidence to warrant ‘an airtight’ case against the perpetrators.

“We are implementing a system that will prevent a repeat of these irregularities. These mechanisms are in place…and we’re validating our findings that will link (these perpetrators) and once we do, we’ll (take action in the proper forum),” Rollo said. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
