GOLD Star Daily reigned supreme in the battle of the brains as its chess entries made a sweeping one-two finish of the 41st Cagayan de Oro Press Freedom Week chess competition held on Tuesday at Barangay 24 covered court, Cagayan de Oro City.

GSD’s sports writers Lynde Salgados and Jaime Joshua Frias II both played undefeated against their respective opponents from other media networks and agreed to a truce when they faced each other.

Finishing the five-round tourney with identical 4.5 points, Salgados and Frias were declared champion and runner-up after the tiebreaker with Jun Espinosa of the PNP Press Corp bagging the third-place honor.

Salgados had been the perennial chess king of the Oro media chessfest before the pandemic with his reliable compatriot Frias grabbing the championship once when his mentor turned to billiard and became the Press Freedom Week’s first-ever back-to-back nine-balls champion.

Meanwhile, Bombo Radyo’s James Licuanan emerged as single men dart’s champion with Gold Star Daily’s Ben Balce and Cagayan de Oro Press Club’s Boyet Paredes snaring the second and third places, respectively.

In the double dart contest, COPC’s Paredes and John Paul Barsopia took the first place with the PNP Press Corp’s tandem of Jonas Bustamante and John Michael Bustamante and the GSD’s pair of Balce and Louie Malisa securing the second and third spots, respectively.

The double dart’s female champions were Magnum Radyo’s Nelgen Barquilla and Jane Luna as Golden Banner’s Glad Banaag and Lyle Arda settled for the runner-up.
