ILIGAN City ― I’m fascinated with this UH project. No, this initial is not about that early morning show on a TV channel. Although the initial letters are the same. Now, talking about initials, there are initials that we have heard of. And we can recognize them immediately. Even if they are associated mostly with millennials or other kinds of beings of which maybe some of them, might be “not like us.” Like LOL, OOP. OOT, DAIP. WPS, WTF, MTF. They stand for laugh out loud, out of place, out of topic, displaying affection in public, West Philippine Sea.

As to the last two, ah, go figure them yourselves! I think then Pres. Digong is. familiar with them.

Anyway, UH means Upper Hinaplanon, an upper barangay here, with a population of over 6,000 to 2020 data.

What makes it unique? Well, their SK people (there, initials go again but everybody knows what it means). The SK there, led by one Vera Mae Bado came up with one good project. Which they named, “Bringing Upper Hinaplanon to the Digital Age.”

Upon interview, Bado said that first their project brought to Iloilo City on June 12, was among the top 20. They moved up to the top 10. Aided by sponsorships, solicitations, and assistance from officials of the city and concerned citizens they were able to bring home some bacon, so to speak. Like a trophy for that. Because said barangay then did not have any IRA, now called NTA. (Internal Revenue Allotment and National Tax Allotment, initials again).

Well and good. “Digitalization” as we are aware, is the mantra these days. To the point, that we’re addicted to them. If not used properly. Yet in other aspects, we are lagging behind. Because we are always in the “scroll” mode. Every moment. No matter where we are. In relation to this, I saw a joke on a TV show, with some man taking a bath in a bathtub. One hand was making the motions of bathing. While the other hand was holding above the water, a gadget, and doing the scrolling. So, scroll, scroll, scroll, and scroll, he did!

Even in public utility jeepneys, millennials and even those in the older generation, and even toddlers, are holding onto their gadgets and doing the scrolling, scrolling, scrolling, and smiling and laughing as they go about in their virtual reality.

Never mind the reality that is not virtual! As those gadgets are the only things that matter to them.

In this connection too, I saw a couple eating out in a diner. And while waiting for their order, they did not engage in a conversation. They were just scrolling and scrolling in their own gadgets.

What has become of us? Have we become such gadget-crazy creatures? So, maybe, the UH project is no big deal at all.
