TURKISH Ambassador Mehmet Suat Akgün expressed confidence in the future of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), following a productive visit to the Bangsamoro Government Center (BGC) in Cotabato City, Philippines on August 4.

He committed to ongoing support for the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), a peace accord designed to bring stability to the region.

The Ambassador, who chairs the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB), met with BARMM Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim to discuss the progress of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) decommissioning process.

The IDB, a joint initiative of the Philippine Government (GPH) and MILF, oversees the decommissioning of MILF forces and weapons, a key aspect of the CAB normalization framework.

During the meeting, Akgün noted the positive momentum and expressed optimism for the region’s future.

“There’s also a good momentum that processes are going on, and I am pretty sure that the people of Bangsamoro are also feeling the same positive development for a peaceful and stable future,” Akgün said.

Ebrahim thanked the Ambassador and his delegation for their visit and commitment to the process, highlighting the challenges and opportunities ahead.

He emphasized the importance of careful coordination between the two panels for the upcoming fourth phase of the decommissioning process.

“For the next schedule of the 4th Phase of the decommissioning process and other concerns, both panels would decide it, but before our panel goes to Malaysia for the meeting, our Central Committee will convene first to discuss the possible issues to be undertaken,” Ebrahim said.

The ongoing support from Turkey aligns with Ebrahim’s 12-point enhanced priority agenda, which aims to enhance peace, justice, and security across the BARMM through proactive collaboration with law enforcement agencies, development partners, and relevant stakeholders.

Ambassador Akgün’s visit underscores Turkey’s commitment to peace and stability in the region, reflecting its longstanding involvement in the GPH-MILF peace process.

As the IDB continues its critical role in the decommissioning process, Ambassador Akgün reassured that the body will impartially, integrally, and confidentially oversee proceedings, hoping for continued progress throughout the year.(With PIA-10 Lanao Sur)
