TOP female chess players can be found in the booming town of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

The Getubig sisters, Lyn and LJ, and the Dalagan siblings, Kyla and Rena, all from Tagoloan, showed masterful class in the ongoing 2023 Misamis Oriental Age-Group chess eliminations that kicked off Saturday, October 21 at the Green Lane 2nd Floor of the Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City.

Both seeking Batang Pinoy slots in the Girls 15-Under category, the Getubig sisters played through undefeated in the first four rounds, then halved the point in the final round to emerge co-champions in the qualifying tourney conducted by the personnel of the Provincial Sports Development Office and strongly supported by the local chess community.

“They (Getubig sisters) were with us when Misamis Oriental competed last year in the National Batang Pinoy Championships in Vigan City. Their Vigan experience mattered in their quest to hurdle again the local elimination,” arbiter Lorenzo ‘Jun’ Cuizon told Gold Star Daily.

The Dalagan siblings were not also to be outdone.

Rena Dalagan was undefeated in six rounds, winning all her matches to top the Girls 11-Under class, a full point ahead of closest pursuer Mary Angela Gia Bagongon (five pts) who also qualified.

Kyla Dalagan dominated Althea Fianna Bansiloy in their race-to-four match, 4-1 for the second slot in the Girls’ 17-under bracket.

Kyla and Rena are expected to join their more illustrious sister and now Manila-based Sara Dalagan of the National University if Governor Peter M. Unabia finally gives his go-signal for the province of Misamis Oriental to partake anew in the Batang Pinoy Games in Marikina City this coming December.

“For now nga gi-submit pa lang atong proposed Batang Pinoy budget for approval, ang endorsement pa lang to play in the national games from the Capitol atong mapasalig sa mga bata,” clarified acting PSDO head Reynand Fuentes.

Events on tap for boys and girls are the 17-under, 15-under, 13-under, 11-under, and 9-under categories, featuring the best and rising age-group pawnpushers from Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City.
