IN a significant step towards women’s empowerment, the office of the City Mayor, led by Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy, has taken a bold initiative to support the financial independence of marginalized women in the community.

Sheila Lumbatan, the Chief of Staff and the chairperson for the Gender and Development Office (GAD), has facilitated the handover of a P150,000 cheque to the women’s advocacy group TISAKA.

This substantial contribution is earmarked for kick-starting livelihood projects for women who have previously been involved in the sex trade, according to Lumbatan.

She added that the funds are expected to serve as seed capital for this group’s transition to entrepreneurial ventures, helping them forge a new path toward self-sufficiency and a higher standard of living.

The initiative, a collaboration between the GAD, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWD), and TISAKA, focuses on integrating 50 women into the economic fabric of the city through sustainable business opportunities.

The City Mayor’s Office’s involvement underscores a broader commitment to fostering gender equity and empowering the economically disenfranchised.

“With this financial aid, city leaders, alongside TISAKA, are determined to offer these women dignified alternatives to their previous livelihoods,” said Lumbatan.

She added the overarching goal is their socio-economic betterment, and this initiative is a clear indication of the city’s resolve to ensure inclusive progress and the well-being of all its citizens.

Further details and updates on this empowering program can be obtained by following the communications from the City Mayor’s Office and the collaborating agencies.
