These bishops are here to attend the 128th plenary assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) from July 6 to July 8 at the Chali Conference Center.

This assembly marks the first time that the CBCP’s high-level meeting will be held in Mindanao, making it a significant event for the region.

Mayor Uy expressed his gratitude and pride, noting that both his administration and the people of Cagayan de Oro feel honored to host such a prestigious gathering.

The mayor has called on the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) and the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) to ensure all preparations are finalized for the arrival of the country’s bishops and Vatican officials.

He emphasized the need for tight security and smooth traffic management to facilitate the event.

The closed-door meeting, as mentioned on the CBCP website, will commence with an address by Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, the CBCP president.

The bishops will discuss important issues and elect chairs for various commissions and sub-commissions within the CBCP.

Msgr. Bernardo Pantin, CBCP secretary-general, highlighted that the agenda includes the election of chairs for the Commission on Catholic Education, the Sub-commission on Retired, Sick and Elderly Priests, the Sub-commission for Permanent Deacons, and the Office for the Postulation of the Causes of Saints.

In addition to these elections, the bishops will discuss proposed activities for the Jubilee 2025 celebrations in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, City Mayor’s Office Chief of Staff Sheila Lumbatan said that this significant event happening in our city today will bring many faithful people from different parts of the country.

“It will be a pivotal moment for the Catholic Church, marking important milestones here in our city,” Lumbatan said.

She added that the Cagay-anons are excited to be part of this event.

This event will provide an opportunity for people of faith to gather and reflect together.

“It will be a time of unity and connection for everyone involved,” Lumbatan emphasized.

With the support of the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, the event is expected to be a meaningful experience that emphasizes the values of faith in the city.

“Everyone is looking forward to this event,” Lumbatan added, noting that it promises to be a memorable and heartwarming occasion for all who participate.

Before the assembly, the bishops will participate in a retreat from July 2 to July 4 at the Transfiguration Abbey in Malaybalay City, run by the Benedictine monks.

This retreat aims to provide spiritual reflection and preparation for the upcoming discussions.

One of the key speakers at the retreat is Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States.

His talk will focus on “Synod Spirituality: Embracing Ecology in the Light of Laudato Sí and Laudate Deum,” setting a reflective tone for the bishops as they gather in Cagayan de Oro.
