HOW will we ever elect people who will really bring our country to genuine success and prosperity in 2016? It would seem to me that the only way is to train our people to choose only the candidates who have fear and love of God, and in whom the Spirit of God dwells.

As long as Filipinos in 2016 will not vote for candidates who fear and love God, and who has the Spirit of God in them, our country will continue to be poor, full of troubles and dissension, and will fail in any endeavor. We will continue to see curses of God among us, including foreigners lording it over in businesses, politics, and even in our social lives.

So, the question really is, how do we get our countrymen to consider the spirituality of candidates when election time comes n 2016? How do we tell hungry and virtually ignorant voters to chose candidates who fear and love God when the voters themselves do not have fear and love of God in the first place?

Among us Christian believers, we are aware of God’s lament, coursed through one of His prophets, that His people perish for lack of knowledge about Him. We also know that people do not believe because they have not heard. And they have not heard because there are no teachers or proclaimers of the Word.

It seems that we are in a vicious cycle: people perish because they lack knowledge. They lack knowledge and they lack belief because they have not been taught, and, not having been taught, they have not heard. They have not heard because there are no teachers. There are no longer any teachers because people no longer consider it important to impart knowledge.

And then, people no longer consider it important to impart knowledge because they too no longer believe. And because they no longer believe, they no longer know likewise, and so, inevitably, they perish, and so forth, and so on. Unless we break this vicious cycle of unbelief, there is no way we can have truly good and righteous officials, and there is now way success and prosperity will come to us.

The challenge therefore is to start reminding people of two basic ideas on how we can ever hope to succeed, not only in electing good officials, but in our daily lives as well. The first is learning to listen to God all over again, and, therefore, know His commands and decrees. The second is obeying His commands and decrees sincerely.

These can be done by relentless Bible studies and prayer sessions. Local government units should hold these activities regularly, government offices should conduct them, too, in the morning, before any work is done, and in the afternoon, before any employee is allowed to go home.

The Supreme Court has already shown the lead for this spiritual endeavor, by requiring all judges across the country to recite an ecumenical prayer before any hearing is conducted in courtrooms nationwide, including in Mindanao, mornings and afternoons. If we do this, there would emerge a group of Filipinos who would subconsciously think, act, and speak, based on the Word of God. This is the change that is worth fighting for!
