THE National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) in the city yesterday released a statement on the 68th monthly commemoration of the infamous Ampatuan Massacre in Maguindanao, calling the impunity highlighted by the 2009 killings was a “cancer.”

In a statement signed by NUJP deputy secretary general JB Deveza and NUJP national director Cong Corrales, the group stated: “While the cancer that ended the life of the principal suspect of the Ampatuan Massacre can be accepted as some sort of retribution, a more malignant cancer is still threatening our nation––the cancer of impunity.”

They referred to former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr.’s July 17 death due to liver cancer. The group said Ampatuan’s death denied justice to the families of the victims of the bloodiest electionelated violence in the country.

“He may have eluded human justice but what is certain is, he now swims in the river of fire in hell––that’s divine justice,’’ reads part of the NUJP statement.

It added: “After more than five years, the Ampatuan Massacre case has been locked in a limbo of legal technicalities. Justice that is this delayed is justice denied.

“If not addressed decisively, the cancer of impunity will only thrive especially so since election year is nearing. “We demand justice.”
