AS the government prepares for a wideanging response to address what has been described as the “Godzilla” El Niño, an environmental watchdog urged the public to conserve water and electricity all the more.

The Eco Waste Coalition appealed for public cooperation in reducing water and electricity consumption with the unfolding El Niño as the Physical Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) pushed for “precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impacts of this phenomenon.”

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) predicted last week the occurrence of “one of the strongest El Niños in recorded history” in the coming months, with climatologist Bill Patzert saying that it “has the potential of being the Godzilla El Niño.”

“We better brace ourselves for this powerful El Niño on the horizon,” said Aileen Lucero, EcoWaste Coalition coordinator.“Rising temperatures would also mean enlarged demand for both water and electricity as people wrestle against the scorching heat.”

“In anticipation of potential supply deficiency, all sectors of the society need to take extra steps to conserve water and electricity use during the El Niño episode and beyond,” she emphasized.
