IT’S the proverbial two birds with one stone solution: city hall could save a considerable amount of taxpayers’ money while a dairy association here could feed their livestock at a time when its pastures are parched due to the dry spell.
The Northern Mindanao Dairy Association has volunteered to take care of the hyacinth problem which threatens the marine life of the Cagayan River.
City Local Environmental and Natural Resources Office (Clenro) chief Edwin Dael said the association, which owns pastures for cattle and goats in the provinces of Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon, has paid for its own farmhands to clear the river of hyacinth.
“Wala na may sagbot ang mga pasto karon kay ting-init man ug wala nay makaon ang mga baka ug kanding. So ila nalang gikompay ang hyacinth diha sa suba kay maoy ilang ibahog sa ilang mga hayop,” Dael said.
He said that because the association volunteered to take care of the hyacinth problem in the river, city hall saved a considerable amount of taxpayers’ money.
It can be recalled that Dael convened a meeting with the City Engineer’s Office, Department of Agriculture, environmentalists from Liceo de Cagayan University, and the fisherfolk living along Cagayan River to plan out how to address the hyacinth infestation that has threatened the river’s ecosystem.
However, just when the City Engineer’s Office was preparing its backhoe for the clearing operation, an official of the Northern Mindanao Dairy Association talked with city officials, and volunteered to clear the river of the hyacinth.
“Na save nato ang atong dakong gasto unta sa among operation anang hyacinth kay mipasalig na ang dairy association nga sila na ang bahala anang maong sagbot sa suba,” said Dael.
