Senior Insp. Alex Celiz, police chief of Trento town identified the barangay chairman as Raul Granada, 50, of Barangay Cuevas.

Celiz said a militiaman identified as Napoleon Cortez was shot dead by New People’s Army rebels.

He said Granada was able to escape by running before rebels encircled his house.

Celiz said Cortez, who came on a motorcycle and mistook the armed men as fellow militiamen, was shot as soon as he realized they were rebels.

“Cortez tried to escape but it was too late. He was shot dead on the spot by the NPA rebels,” Celiz said.

Police said there were two possible motives: the abduction attempt was due to partisan politics and Granada’s involvement in a cooperative. (ben serrano)
