The houses made of light materials and adjacent to each other were quickly reduced to ashes in the fire that reached the third alarm level.

There was no casualty report, and authorities placed the damages to property at some P1 million.

Investigators said the fire started at the house of a retired policeman, Andrew Achas.

Insp. Christino Banac of a local fire station said they are yet to confirm the reports about the cause of the fire.

Banac also denied allegations that firemen were not able to respond quickly because they were asleep.

“Even without the fire truck, there were personnel on duty at the fire station at that time,” said Banac.

Authorities said at least 22 displaced families are now being temporarily sheltered at a covered court, and others went to their relatives.

The municipal government of Tagoloan has distributed food packs consisting of rice, canned goods, noodles to the victims. The capitol also send aid for the victims.

“We will assist them until they will be rehabilitated,” said Vida Sebastian, municipal social welfare and development officer.
