PROSECUTORS would soon be subjected, too, to random drug tests, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said here on Friday.

During the Mindanao-wide Prosecutors’ Conference, Aguirre said the government was aware that there are prosecutors who serve as protectors of groups engaged in the illegal drug trade, and that some are even into substance abuse.

Aguirre said the Department of Justice (DOJ) cannot be expected to efficiently handling illegal drug cases with such kind of prosecutors, hence, the need for nationwide random drug tests.

“Don’t let yourself be corrupted as prosecutors. Just do your job. I already used a memorandum order to start nationwide drug tests for prosecutors,” said Aguirre as he urged prosecutors to help sustain the anti-illegal drugs campaign of the Duterte administration, and ensure that it would not falter.

“It’s very hard for the Justice secretary to go after corrupt prosecutors than to fight the illegal drug trade. They are at the frontline and they commit corruption. It will taint the name of the department,” he said.

Aguirre assured the prosecutors that the DOJ would provide them staff and office support.
