Luck was not on his side. Worst, 35-year old Roberto “Lolong” Mamerto did not only die begging to survive–he died of tuberculosis because he can’t buy medicine to live at least a little longer.

Police said Mamerto, a former small-scale miner and gold panner from Rosario, Agusan del Sur, was discovered dead in a shelter at the gold panning area of Barangay Magsaysay, Placer, Surigao del Norte on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said Mamerto was found to have suffered from tuberculosis, the reason why he stopped gold panning. A post-mortem examination was conducted.

Due to his health problems, Mamerto spent his remaining days wandering and begging for food to survive.
