Over 100 stallholders at Cogon market signed the Feb. 6 petition, a copy of which was handcarried by Councilor Leon Gan and given to Councilor Zaldy Ocon who is serving as acting vice mayor.

The stallholders said they were strongly opposed to the planned renovation of the entire ground floor of Cogon market.

They said that if city hall plans to improve Cogon’s drainage system, then only stallholders who would be directly affected by the drainage project should be relocated, and they should be allowed to return once the construction is completed.

The vendors also opposed plans to move the cafeteria and food  section to the market’s second level.

They also opposed plans to reduce the stall spaces in the vegetable section at the second  level of the public market.

“Kung dunay    delinquent, data-data lang  ang bayad,” they stated.

In case of city hall and vendors agree on the terms, they said they want a memorandum of agreement to be signed at the session hall of the city council.

Councilor Gan  said many of the vendors were worried that they would be ejected from Cogon market for good as a result of the planned renovation.

Gan called on the city council’s committee on economic enterprises to act on the petition.

“Panginabuhi gud    nila ang nakataya diha,  dili man mahimo nga ila   kanang langan-langon,” he said.

Councilor Ocon said he was told that the vendors decided to send the petition because the chairman of the council’s economic enterprise committee, Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya, gave them the cold-shoulder.
