REMNANTS of the Maute group, now pocketed in two villages in Marawi City, have slackened resistance, Armed Forces  spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said Saturday.

Padilla based the assessment on reports from ground commanders who claimed that volume of return fire from the terrorists have considerably slackened compared to the first days of the campaign.

“They are still fighting back but their return fire is much lower compared to the early days of the campaign,” Padilla said.

He said it was indicative that the terrorists were running low on ammunition and other supplies.

Ground commanders placed the number of remaining Maute Group terrorists to around “40 to 60.”

The death toll in the Marawi armed conflict reached 522 terrorists, 119 government troops and 45 civilians. (pna)
