MISAMIS Oriental remained as the biggest energy consumer in northern Mindanao accounting for 65 percent of region 10’s total actual energy consumption, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).

Based on Neda’s regional economic report on energy sales for the second quarter of 2017, Camiguin had the least energy purchase, sharing about 0.60 during the quarter.

The Neda report also showed that the total energy consumption of the region during the 2nd quarter increased by about five percent which was equivalent to 43,827,963 megawatts more than the consumption a year ago.

Neda economic development specialist Cecilio Clarete said the higher investments in construction industry contributed to the increase in energy consumption.

He said the provinces of Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental posted increases in their energy consumptions, while the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines reported declines in the energy consumption of the provinces of Camiguin and Misamis Occidental by 0.22 and three percent, respectively.

Clarete said these may not mean reduction in the energy consumption of the provinces since there were newly operated power generation plants or the so-called “embedded power generation facilities” of the distribution utilities which were not reflected in the report.

Clarete also said household energization in Region 10 posted at 64.65 percent out of the 873,084 total households as of the second quarter of 2017.

He said there was a 4.52-percent increase or an additional 31,958 households energized compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Clarete said the electrification program of the National Electrification Administration in the region accomplished about 82.45 percent of the potential 10,229 sitios regionwide.

“The level of sitio energization is reduced by 0.59 percent or a reduction of 50 sitios as of June 2017 compared to the same period last year,” said Clarete.

According to NEA the continuing validation and counter checking of sitios regionwide resulted in the decreased in number of energized sitios.

“Region 10 already achieved 100 percent barangay electrification since 2010,” said Clarete.

He said the challenge now is for the region to attain universal energization of sitios in the region as targeted in 2017-2022 results matrix.
