ILIGAN City — Human rights advocates launched the Maranao Siyap (Care) Movement at an inn here over the weekend.
Abdani Alonto, one of the leading convenors acted as the master of ceremonies during the occasion. Maulana Mamutok welcomed the participants and gave an overview of Maranao Siyap (Care) Movement.
He said organizing the movement became necessary with the rising concerns after the Marawi Siege and now that the process of rebuilding Marawi is underway.
Sittie Anairah Lomondot reported that there is an alarming rise of criminality involving residents of Marawi such as murder, rape, kidnapping, attempted abduction and hold-ups.
She mentioned the incident where a female Maranao was found dead and dumped in Naawan, Misamis Oriental and a female staff of Amai Pakpak Hospital who was found dead with her head almost severed and hidden under the bed of a lodging house in Iligan.
She said the cadaver found in Naawan was a resident of Bacolod Chico in Marawi who left to buy medicines in Iligan, was probably held up and never seen alive again.
She also reported attempted kidnaps of three Niqabi Students, three elementary school pupils of Amai Pakpak Elementary School, a Grade 7 pupil of MSU-ISED and a female teacher on her way from Marawi to Saguiaran who was brought to another direction by the driver but was able to escape.
Finally, she reported that on July 6, a 10-year-old male was abducted Tambacan; on July 10, a 17-year-old female was abducted in Palao; and on July 11, an 18-year-old female last seen in Iligan City was missing.
She said the Maranao has a culture of silence that keeps people from reporting crimes to the authorities. However, this time around the situation has become too alarming that there is a need to act.
Lawyer Abuali Abbas explained to reporters that they launched the Maramo Siyap Movement to raise awareness, participation, and cooperation among the people in helping solve rising problems.
He said the volunteers in the movement are expected to help in gathering information that will help the authorities in solving crimes and other problems.
The launching was inspired by speakers from the various sectors especially the Aleems and other concerned citizens including activist and leader former Assemblywoman and BTC Commissioner Samira Ali Gutoc-Tomawis.
