“Even before Christmas Day, the Army offensives in the different areas of Surigao del Sur have been relentless and have intensified, but it has not broken our will. We have managed to celebrate the 50th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP),” said Ka Sandara Sidlakan, spokesperson of the NPA Guerrilla Front 21 and 30.

Sidlakan said the NPA rebels celebrated their anniversary in small groups knowing that a big activity would put at risk civilians.

“We received a lot of calls and communications from different individuals, groups and even politicians, asking where they would be able to attend the 50th anniversary celebration. But in the present situation, we didn’t want to risk the lives of innocent people who might be caught in the aggressive drive of the military,” she said.

“We celebrated with each of the different platoons in Caraga region. This enabled us to still commemorate our 50 years as well as share with our comrades our achievements and milestones throughout the campaign, further boosting the morale of the NPA members,” said Sidlakan.

On Monday, Dec. 24, the NPA started observing a unilateral ceasefire, but it took a defensive position.
