BUTUAN City–Armed men started a fire that destroyed a banana plantation owned by the Sumifru in Barangay Tagbina, Surigao del Sur, over the weekend.

Police said the armed group set on fire a waiting shed, and then the fire quickly spread towards the plantation. In a report sent to the police regional office in this city, the said it Sumifro head guard Jaime Estrada who reported the arson that took place on Saturday night.

Quoting Estrada, police said, the suspects the fire from the waiting shed spread toward Block 117 of the plantation in Barangay Sta. Fe, and then spread further and destroyed some 250 fully grown banana hills.

Police said investigators were not ruling out that the arson was a result of a labor dispute involving between workers, a cooperative, a manpower agency, and Sumifru.
