City Councilor Reuben Dada, chairman of the Committee on Social Services has opposed the plan of Senators Loren Legarda, Grace Poe, and Nancy Binay to pass a law prohibiting the strict implementation for the discipline of children.

Daba said there is nothing wrong with parents trying to impose strict discipline over their children, it is also an obligation of any concerned parents to impose discipline to children who committed wrongdoing while growing up.

Obligasyonsausakaginakananangpagmatotoangatongmgaanak,” he said.

He admitted that there are parents who fail to impose discipline on their children especially those who are reportedly engaged in illegal drugs and have committed some nefarious activities.

But he said that these failures were only minimal in every community because it was a parent rule to impose discipline in every child who is already growing-up.

“Our children (are) our treasures ngagihatagsaGinoo. Mao ngaangpagdisiplinakanilamaoyusausabkatumongalangsamgaginikanan,” he pointed out.

The senators proposal, based on a research, states that most people think strict parenting produces better-behaved kids. However, research studies on discipline consistently show that strict, or authoritarian, childaising actually produces kids with lower esteem and would  behave worse than other kids.

The proposal claimed that parents who relate punitively to their kids have to cut off their natural empathy for their children, which makes the relationship less satisfying to both parents and child. Parenting also becomes much harder for these parents because their kids lose interest in the pleasing them and become much more difficult to manage.

But Daba dismissed such kind of research considering that it is the duty of every parent to imposed discipline to their children.

Angmahitaboanimahimongspoiled naatongmgabata. Kanangmgabatakaronnganamuyodihailalumsatulayis a fact ngasilaspoiled ogmikontrasailangmgaginikanan,” he stressed.

He said because of such current problem on street children, the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) are among those being blamed for not giving more attention to their presence.

Dili naman gani maka-discipline ang mga ginakanan because of Senator Pangilinan law on youth protection.Samotnakahakiningakitangmgaginikanannaangkulatahon,” he added.
