CITY hall plans to make use of its peace and order fund in creating and sustaining the operations of Mayor Oscar Moreno’s proposed homeland security department here.

Councilor Romeo Calizo, chairman of the city council’s police and public safety committee, said the proposed office would have a department head and staff, and would tap the police, Army, Air  Force, Coast Guard, and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), among others.

He said the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) and the City Disaster Risk-Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) would play vitals roles in the proposed department.

Basically, the planned department would coordinate all securityelated work in the city.

Calizo said he and Moreno have had initial discussions on the proposed homeland security department but they have yet to go into the details.

But Calizo said the proposal would need to be approved first by the city council.

“Gikinahanglan gyud ang ordinansa aron ma-institutionalize ang maong department ug dili mahilabtan sa kinsay sunod nga mayor,” Calizo said.

He added: “Na-a may pundo ang peace and order fund sa mayor. Mahimo nga diha koha-on ang gasto sa pagtukod sa homeland security.”

But in the absence of such a department, Calizo said Moreno may use his powers to issue an executive order in order to create a security force in the city. (nitz arancon)
