THE Agora police has blamed a series of accidents along the Gusa-Agora section of the coastal road on the absence of street lights.

Police authorities also said the dark sections of the new road are also potential breeding grounds for crime.

Chief Insp. Allan Curato, Agora police station commander, said there has been a string of serious vehicular accidents along the coastal road section since it was inaugurated early this month by Public Works Secretary Mark Villar.

Most of the accidents took place at night or the wee hours when it was dark, he said.

He cited the Nov. 19 accident involving a truck driven by Allan Ampaso that hit a motorcycle driven Jaorly Mae Estroga, 23, of Barangay Iponan.

A similar accident, involving a truck and a motorcycle driven by Marcelino Hinampas Jr., took place at dawn yesterday. Hinampas was rushed to a hospital for a broken leg and arm.

Curato said concerned officials should speed up the installation of a lighting system.

He said police have submitted requests to Gusa barangay chairman Marlo Tabac while the Agora police started regular patrols on the road section from 6 pm to 8 pm daily.

Curato said he was concerned because the absence of street lights make the area attractive to gangs.

“Tungod pod kay ngitngit, sementado ang gilid sa dalan ug dike na pwede malinkuran, daghan gatambay kay wala poy mga trabaho. Ang uban humana ang mga trabaho, mahitabo ang pag pangawat, pang-hold -up, inom... Kung hubog na, magbinatuha dayon kini. Gakahitabo kining krimen sa oras sa alas dos sa kabuntagon,” Curato said.

Department of Public Works and Highways project engineer Leowald Pecore said the requests for lights for the coastal road and elsewhere were being processed.
