The Regional Task Force on Anti-Firecrackers has just been reactivated in time for the Yuletide season, said Department of Health (DOH 10) regional director Nimfa Torrizo yesterday, adding that their primary goal this year is “zero casualty” on firecrackerselated incidents on Christmas and New Year’s day.

The task force conducted its regional school-based launching of the anti-firecrackers campaign at the City High School in Nazareth Subdivision, this city. This year’s anti-firecrackers campaign theme is “Sa ingay walang sablay, sa paputok goodbye kamay.”

During the launch, Torrizo showed the high school students how using “torotot” is much more fun and way safer than lighting firecrackers.

Torrizo said its anti-firecrackers campaign last year was so successful that it brought the region’s record of firecrackerelated injuries down to 33.59% compared with the 2013 record of 131% injuries.

“Kining 33.59 percent sa 2014, mimarka lamang  sa 87 recorded cases sa fire crackerelated (injuries) sa tibo-ok Region 10,” said Torrizo.

She said 82% of the firecrackerelated injuries in 2014 involved male victims.

Torrizo said that last year, Misamis Oriental topped in the entire northern Mindanao in terms of firecrackerelated injuries. “Picolo” was the leading firecracker which caused the injuries.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG 10) is leading the task force. Its members include the DOH 10, Department of Education, Department of Trade and Industry, Philippine National Police, and the Bureau of Fire Protection. (nitz arancon)
