THIS city’s Local Environment and Natural Resources Office head has cried foul over what he claimed as blatant disinformation on the real condition of the city’s rivers and waterways.

Clenro chief Edwin Dael scoffed at the complaint filed by former councilor Celestino Ocio and brought up by councilor Teodulfo Lao, Jr at the city council recently that Cagayan River has been “over quarried.”

Dael said the reports cited by Lao in his special report to the city council was lifted from Ocio’s Facebook wall which has not be validated by technical experts. Ocio’s post on Facebook, Dael said, have been bolstered by “troll accounts” who have been posting “anti-(Mayor Oscar) Moreno sentiments.

The Clenro chief said Ocio’s supposed findings are bereft of real technical data.

Nganong mo-ingon man sila nga naay over extraction sa mga mineral? Asa man sila nakakuha ana? Technical people ba diay sila,” Dael rhetorically asked.

He said only the Mines and Geosciences Bureau have the technical capability and authority to assess if there is an over extraction of minerals, like sand and gravel.

Dael said MGB’s mining engineers and geologists conducts a “hydro-graphic survey” on the city’s rivers and waterways every year, specifically on areas where there are quarrying operations.

Wala pa man mo-ingon ang MGB nga nakita na ang bedrock ilawom sa suba. Buot pasabot, nga wala pa’y over extraction sa mga mineral especially sa sand and gravel,” Dael explained.

On the contrary, Dael said, Cagayan River needs to be dredged since it is already shallow because of over-siltation.
