MALAYBALAY, Bukidnon–Hundreds of families living along a river in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon were evacuated Thursday night to safer grounds due to threats of flooding as a result of continued rains, the military said.

Capt. Norman Tagros, the spokesperson of the Army’s 403rd Brigade based here, said the evacuation had to be done as a preemptive measure.

He said that search and retrieval operation of Charylou Pangandigan, 34, who was reported missing on Wednesday was also held in abeyance as the Tagoloan River continued to rise Thursday.

Another 4,180 individuals in Valencia City, Bukidnon coming from 10 villages there were also evacuated to higher grounds due to rising flood waters, he said.

According to Tagros, the road in the village of Quezon in Bukidnon, was declared impassable after the residents in the village were evacuated earlier Thursday.

He said  the military also assisted the local government in Gingoog City in the distribution of relief goods to city residents who were evacuated to the city’s gymnasium Thursday.

The army’s 403rd Brigade has deployed six disaster and rescue teams to assist the local governments since the floodings occurred Monday due to heavy rains.

Tagros said the brigade has three infantry battalions and a special force unit deployed in the provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental. (pna)
