THE Department of Heath (DOH) has stepped up its “High Impact 5” program to strengthen maternal health care, infant care, child care, the campaign on HIV/Aids, and improve its service delivery network in the city.

The DOH announced this during last week’s “High Impact 5 Summit” at Pearlmont Hotel. Gracing the event were Health Undersecretary Vicente Belizario, Mayor Oscar Moreno, and other DOH and local officials.

Belizario said the DOH’s target is “zero mortality” on pregnant women, infants and five-year-old children and younger, and “zero” HIV/Aids cases.

He said this would be done by significantly improving health services of doctors, nurses, and midwives, among others, starting from the grassroots  level.

Belizario called on city hall and barangay officials to fully support the DOH campaign.
He also said the DOH would need the support of the city council because the campaign requires a 50/50 sharing of funds from the DOH and local governments.

Dr. Anistides Conception Tan,  DOH director for Region 10, said the health department was aware and has factored the political bickerings in city hall.

But Tan said the DOH would pursue the program in the city even if the city council does not authorize Mayor Moreno to release funds as city hall’s contribution to the campaign.
“With or without the support of the city council, the progman must go on,” said Tan, adding that the Department would not allow the program to be affected by local political bickerings.–nitz arancon
