Benon was swimming with other companions but was directly hit by the bolt. His other companions experienced shock, but were safe, the police said.

Police said the body of Benon was brought to his hometown in Lantapan, Bukidnon.

Weather bureau officials in El Salvador City warned the public of swimming in the open sea when there is rain.

The weather bureau officials also discouraged children from bathing under the rains because a lightning bolt could happen.

“We asked swimmers to clear the open seas when there is rain to avoid being caught by a lightning bolt,” weather officials said.

Weather officials reported an “intertropical convergence zone” (ITCZ) in most part of Mindanao, which causes intermittent rains and lightning. (pna)
