THE City Council committee on urban and rural poor chaired by Councilor Zaldy Ocon during its recent committee meeting tackled the Writ of Demolition issued in Civil Case No. C16-Jan-019 that is scheduled for enforcement and implementation on Jan. 25 along Mortola Street.

The court ordered the settlers to peacefully vacate the premises and to pay a certain amount to the owner as payment for rent for the months/years they spent living on said property.

Eight families, who are affected by the demolition order, requested the committee to help them with their relocation.

A representative of the City Legal Office said since an order has already been given by the Supreme Court, the only remedy to help the affected families is for the committee to pass a resolution requesting the court to hold in abeyance the execution of the writ. However, the grant of the request would still depend on the judge’s discretion, said the representative.

To help the affected families, Ocon said his committee will endorse a resolution requesting the court to hold in abeyance the demolition order to give time to the city to relocate the affected families. (sp)
