Committees on social services, on women and family relations, and on police, fire and public safety expressed alarm on the rising cases involving violence against women and children in the city.
Councilor Zaldy Ocon, in a special report to the City Council, expressed concern over cases involving violence against women and children as compiled by Police Station No. 8 in Barangay Lumbia.
“The report is quite alarming because it is mostly rape cases involving minors in our hinterland barangays. But what is disconcerting is that most of the suspects are relatives of minor-victims especially step fathers,” he stressed.
The councilor said this could be due to the fact that houses in the hinterlands are usually single room houses wherein the living room, bedroom, kitchen and dining area are without divisions or doors to separate one area from the other.
“In such situation, suspects, especially when drunk could easily commit the crime,” Ocon cited.
He expressed hopes that through the City Council and its standing committees the alarming rate of rape cases would be looked into in the rural areas with the help and assistance of the punong barangays. He suggested that his report, together with the report of Police Station No. 8 for the period January to December 2018, be referred to the committees concerned. (sp)
