Suan said these school supplies such as crayons, binders and other supplies may contain harmful toxic substances such as Asbestos which can cause severe damage including lung cancer. He said these may also contain Lead and Benzene, a carcinogen that is linked to kidney, liver and immune system damage and people with low immune system could easily get affected.

And Cadmium, that even a low level of this harmful substance can cause cancer and neurological damage, he added.

Suan suggested that the problem be endorsed to pertinent agencies, such as the City Health and the Department of Health for their help on the matter.

Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy referred the matter to the committee on trade and commerce. He directed the committee to notify the Department of Trade and Industry so that it can act on the problem. (sp)
