SHOOTING guard Louie Jun Tubo missed a buzzer-beating three-pointer with Laguindingan up by two points. But in doing so, Tubo fished a foul that sent him outright to the charity line.

Dealing with tremendous pressure, Tubo refused to cave in as he cooly sank three straight pressure-packed free throws to lift Gingoog to a 33-32 win in the Misamis Oriental’s 48th PYAP basketball championship match, over the weekend, at the Misamis Oriental Integrated Sports Complex in Cagayan de Oro City.

PYAP stands for the Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines, Inc., a duly constituted barangay-based organization of the out-of school-youth between 15-24 years old who are clientele of the DSWD.

Lipay kaayo ko nga napadaug ang team sa akong free throws nga swerte sab kay na foul ko pagtira sa tres. At least, nabawas-bawasan among kasakit,” the lanky Tubo told Gold Star Daily.

Wiggling out of the jaws of defeat, the Gingoog City’s so-called ‘Kambrass Boys’ also dedicated their thrilling win to a friend and fellow baller ‘Opaw’ Bagongon who recently passed away after collapsing during a basketball game.

Also fortifying Gingoog’s championship finish are Cymond Jansol Arcales, Kyle Alexander ‘Bjerrex’ Baguiz, Rico Po, Richard Obedencio, and Ancelmo Rollan Marban with Korky Taneo Ong as their head coach and Geovanie Sabuco as assistant coach.

Played in two quarters with only six-minute time allotted for each period, Gingoog defeated Manticao, Libertad, Naawan, and Gitagum in succession before facing Laguindingan in the final of the day-long 23-team hoop fest.

The Gingoog Kambrass Boys were awarded the P10,000 top purse last Friday night’s culminating activity of the 48th Misamis Oriental PYAP Founding Anniversary at the Capitol ground.

No less than Governor Peter ‘Sr. Pedro’ Unabia came to grace the awards rites alongside newly-minted provincial sports director Francis Sean Condeza and consultant for sports and recreation of Gingoog Efren Pollentes, among others.
