CAGAYAN de Oro City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy directed the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) on Tuesday to take decisive action against illegal parking in the city’s streets.

Thus, said City Mayor’s Office Chief of Staff Sheila Lumbatan Thursday comes after concerns were raised about the growing issue of unauthorized parking, especially by owners and operators of large trucks, which has led to significant congestion in various areas of the city.

Lumbatan said the directive was issued during Tuesday’s Management Committee (ManComm) meeting held at a local hotel, where Mayor Klarex expressed his dismay at how city streets have essentially been transformed into makeshift parking lots by some vehicle owners.

“Mayor Klarex emphasized the need to address this problem promptly to ensure smoother traffic flow and safer roads for all residents,” said Lumbatan.

Mayor Uy, acvording to Lumbatan highlighted the negative impact of illegal parking on the overall traffic situation in the city.

He (Uy) noted that the unauthorized use of public roads for parking not only obstructs the movement of vehicles but also poses risks to pedestrians and other road users.

This has sparked growing concerns about public safety and the need for swift action to alleviate the issue, said Uy.

To support the crackdown, the City Legal Office has been instructed to provide legal assistance to bolster the RTA’s efforts in addressing illegal parking.

Mayor Klarex stressed that the city government is committed to upholding traffic regulations and will not tolerate any threats or legal challenges from vehicle owners found to be in violation of parking rules.

“The mayor’s firm stance on this matter underscores the city’s determination to restore order to its streets and ensure that public spaces are utilized appropriately,” said Lumbatan.

Lumbatan added that the RTA is expected to intensify its enforcement activities in response to Mayor Klarex’s directive, and the city government is set to work closely with law enforcement agencies to bring about positive changes in the city’s traffic management.
