FORMER Mayor Oscar Moreno declared his intention to run in the upcoming 2025 midterm elections during a media fellowship event held on January 18. Moreno’s decision hinges on the candidacy of the current Mayor Rolando Uy.

Expressing concern about the current state of the city, Moreno emphasized the need for a change in leadership, citing issues such as the overflowing garbage and an apparent tip-of-the-iceberg problem with the city’s administration.

He stressed his reservations about the city being under Uy’s governance.

“At 72 years old, I am enjoying my life now. I play basketball, and I have my Overtime show. I thought that the city is in good hands, but I’m being proven wrong,” Moreno told reporters.

The current situation has fueled his worry about the city’s future, despite his belief that Mindanao is thriving, positioning Cagayan de Oro as the catalyst of Northern Mindanao.

Moreno questioned whether Cagayan de Oro is taking the lead, especially compared to other cities like Iloilo, Butuan, Surigao, and Iligan, which are experiencing positive economic growth.

As he pondered the possibility of running again, Moreno said, “I’m not saying that I won’t, and I’m not saying that I will, but if that’s Klarex’s (governance) style, then why not,” confidently highlighting the importance of proactive leadership.

Reiterating the famous phrase, “Evil succeeds when good men do nothing,” Moreno criticized the current administration’s style, pointing out the challenges he faced during his time, such as landfill management and the development of JR Borja.

“If Klarex manages, even if I’m alone, I will run. Why not? I thought he was the Klarex that I knew for 12 years, but when he won, the real Klarex emerged,” Moreno expressed, noting a perceived change in Mayor Uy’s demeanor.

Responding to Moreno’s statements, BenCyrus Ellorin, one of the mayor’s spokespersons, stated, “Moreno is free to dream. Libre mangarap.”

Ellorin emphasized that Uy is focused on governing the city and serving the poorest of the poor to make the city more livable.

He added that Moreno’s decision is his prerogative.
