CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The city’s 597 scholars would receive an additional Php 500 monthly allowance retroactive January this year, a city executive announced on Thursday.
City Councilor Adrian Barba, chair of the City College Scholarship Program (CCSP), said that with the additional Php 500, each city scholar would now receive Php 1500 monthly.
He said that the additional Php 500 monthly allowance for the city scholars comes in effect with the approval of City Ordinance No. 12757-14.
According to Barba, the newly approved City Ordinance also amended City Ordinance No. 5368-96 thereby increasing the monthly stipend and decreasing the general weigh-ted average of the city scho-lar from 85 percent to 80 percent per semester.
Gilda J. Takiang, of the Community Improvement Division (CID) and coordinator of the CCSP, said the city has released Php 895,500 to cover the city scholars’ monthly allowances from January to March 2015.
She said that the CCSP is also contacting the city scholars who graduated last March because they are still eligible to get the additional monthly allowances.
Takiang said that the monthly allowances do not cover the summer vacation months. She, however, said that the CCSP paid the tuition of the city scholars enrolled last summer on subjects included in the prospectus.
The city paid Php 1,123,107.31 to six schools for 147 city scholars in the summer of 2015, she noted. As of the first semester, 604 are enjoying the CCSP, 157 are in their first year, eight are in their 5th year and 118 are in their 4th year.
Takiang said that the city has appropriated Php 34.5 million for the scholarship program this year. (PNA)
