COUNCILOR Roger Abaday yesterday resigned from two powerful city hall executive bodies, a move seen as part of his preparations for a campaign for the city’s second highest post next year.

Abaday quit as chairman of the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (Cadac), and as a member of the Regulatory and Complaint Board (RCB) in a one-page letter sent to Mayor Oscar Moreno. He said his resignation, effective yesterday, was “irrevocable.”

It was Moreno who appointed Abaday as chair of Cadac and as a member of the RCB.

Abaday’s letter was carefully worded, and gave no hints of partisan politics or personal resentment, a factor in the so-called Sept. 13 “political exodus” of key officials and allies of the Moreno administration to the camp of Rep. Rodriguez.

Abaday was courteous in his letter, although he said his decision to resign was due to “personal reasons.” Reads part of his letter: “Although I have enjoyed working with you, personal reasons necessitate that I have to tender (my) irrevocable resignation of my positions bestowed upon me by your office…”

He told Moreno that he has opted to focus on improving his legislative work, and profession. The councilor is an academic and criminologist by profession.

Abaday expressed his thankfulness and gratefulness to Moreno who was his political ally since 2013 until the Sept. 13 “exodus.”

His letter reads in part: … (D)espite having to leave, I deeply appreciate the opportunities you’ve provided me. I am very grateful (for) your kindest assistance during my tenure…”

Abaday assured Moreno of his “unwavering support as a citizen on causes worthy to the common good of the people of Cagayan de Oro City.”

He added: “One again, thank you so much for the opportunity to be part of you. Kindly extend my thanks and gratitude to the members of Cadac and RCB for their support and trust…

“I do hope that we can stay in touch as public stewards and I am looking forward that you will succeed in all challenges fronting you and the quest of continuing service to the people of CDO. I hope you will accept my most sincere apologies in making October 1, my final day in the aforestated positions.”

Abaday severed his political ties with the Moreno administration along with Councilors Teodulfo Lao Jr. and Enrico Salcedo in Sept. 13 when Rep. Rodriguez announced on air that he would run for mayor against Moreno next year. Until that day, the mayor and congressmen were political allies.

Lao and Salcedo earlier revealed to this paper that resentment over the way Moreno dealt and treated his political allies and supporters factored in their decision to throw their support behind Rodriguez.
