MANILA — Bayan Muna Partylist representative Carlos Isagani Zarate slammed the Aquino government for yet another killing of a lumad leader in Talaingod, Davao del Norte.
“The killings of lumad people must stop now. The continuing spate of killings among the indigenous peoples in Mindanao is an affront to our democracy and grave disregard of the basic human rights of our people,” Zarate said.
Ulas Salanganie, a Mano-bo and Parents, Teachers and Community Association (PTCA) official from Dul-yan, Talaingod town was shot dead on November 23 by unidentified persons.
The killing led to the evacuation of teachers and community leaders and the suspension of classes of the lumad-established school, according to the lumad advocate group Defend Talingod, Save Pantaron.
Zarate said that the killing of Salanganie is part of the “campaign of suppression” against members of people’s organization living within the area of the resourcesich Pantaron Range, also called the Central Cordillera of Mindanao, a mountain range straddling across the provinces of Mi-samis Oriental, Bukidnon, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Davao del Norte and Sur.
