THE mayor of El Salvador City in Misamis Oriental has bailed out after the Sandiganbayan issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with a graft case filed by the Office of the Ombudsman in 2015.
Documents furnished the Gold Star Daily on Wednesday show that Tan posted a P30-thousand bailbond in April 19.
The Sandiganbayan ordered Tan arrested through a March 30 warrant after he was charged by the ombudsman with violation of Section 3(e) of Republic Act 3019.
The mayor was brought to the anti-graft court by assistant special prosecution Irenio Paldeng on July 31, 2015. The filing of the case was approved by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales.
The case against Tan stemmed from a November 2012 move by El Salvador officials to cause the closure and demolition of a government building that was known as “House of Pasalubong and Tourism Center.”
Paldeng stated that the closure and demolition were made “without valid reason.” He also said the demolished building was “structurally sound.”
Paldeng noted that the demolished building had served as a display area of El Salvador residents for their native products, and that the act caused damages amounting to nearly P1 million.
The ombudsman accused Tan of “grave abuse of authority,” “evident bad faith,” “manifest partiality or gross inexcusable negligence.” (herbie gomez)
