ORGANIZED students of the state-owned University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines on Wednesday launched a signature campaign in an effort to pressure authorities into speeding up the investigation into the Dec. 2, 2017, shooting death of university president Dr. Ricardo Rotoras.
The Student Council of USTP said it would send the petition to President Duterte.
The signature campaign was officially started at 3 pm Wednesday, the 40th day since the murder of Rotoras outside his home in a gated subdivision in uptown Cagayan de Oro.
Paula Morian Atienza, president of the USTP Student Council, said the organization aimed at gathering at least 5,000 signatures in the hope that Malacañang would take notice and make investigators speed up their work so that those behind the killing would be identified and brought to court the soonest possible.
Atienza said her group has been observing investigators, and find them to be slow. She said USTP students were growing impatient because there were no signs that Rotoras’s killers would face trial anytime soon.
She appealed to Duterte: “With a remarkable and influential Dr. Rotoras gone, the USTP and his bereaved family humbly ask your good office to do whatever is necessary for the investigation of his case to be sped up. As a grieving community, bringing him justice is the only thing that could bring us into peace with his untimely death.”
