Fresh off the heels of the Pacific Asia’s Travel Association’s (PATA) Food Waste Report, the results of its BUFFET for Youth challenge displayed immense success with the winning team Food Saviors reducing food waste on their campus by a whopping 48%.

Food Saviours, based in Hyderabad and representing the National Institute for Tourism and Hospitality Management, personally organised campaigns across their canteens to drive home the message of food waste, effectively reducing plate scrapings from 521kg to 271kg within a month of implementing the programme.

The BUFFET Campaign was rolled out last year, which also included a toolkit designed to assist businesses in the hospitality and tourism industry to manage their food waste processes.

Alongside this initiative, the ‘BUFFET for Youth’ challenge was launched and targeted towards PATA’s millennial members. PATA’s Food Waste Report, launched on the 9th of May, displays the findings from both initiatives, including other case studies. The report can be downloaded here.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), every year around the globe 1.3 billion tonnes of food is lost or wasted. That is one-third of all food produced for human consumption. Food losses and waste amounts to roughly $680 billion in industrialised countries and $310 billion in developing countries.

With such unsettling numbers, it is an ongoing mission to encourage organisations, to get on board to fight food waste and make it their personal agenda, especially with the next generation. (PR)
