ILIGAN City — The municipality of Bacolod-Kalawi in Lanao del Sur has been leading in the clearing of the national highway from Marawi City to Malabang of all obstructions in compliance with the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte.
According to Sultain Saipoden Polao, about 96 percent of all obstructions have been cleared without resistance from the residents.
“In fact some of the structures like residential houses were voluntarily torn down by their owners,” he said.
Election Officer Apinton Polao of the said town told reporters that he voluntarily demolished part of his semi-concrete house which encroached on the proposed widening of the highway because he is a government employee who is duty-bound to support the programs of the government.
Sultan Polao told reporters that before the start of the clearing operation, Mayor Nora Lucman-Dipatuan called all spiritual, political, traditional, and village leaders to a meeting and asked everybody’s cooperation.
“Ginawa namin ito para sa ikauunlad ng aming bayan,” Mayor Dipatuan said.
According to Municipal Engineer Burundato Aloloy, a total of 700 structures of all types such as residential houses, barangay halls and other public buildings, places of worship and other structures were demolished.
He estimated the total cost of the structures to reach to about P245 million or an average of P350 thousand per structure.
He concluded that he is confident that the clearing operation will be completed before the Sept. 25 deadline.
