PRESIDENT Duterte has named a known labor leader here to the Regional Tripartite  Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB), a move that increases the chances of a P658-minimum daily wage for workers in northern Mindanao.

Duterte appointed labor leader Nicandro Borja as one of the directors of Region 10’s wages and productivity board.

Borja, a lawyer, is the director for operations of the Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP), a labor organization that just this month, filed a petition with the RTWPB for a P320-increase in the minimum wage on behalf of northern Mindanao workers.

Borja will sit in the wages and productivity board as a labor sector representative.

The Gold Star Daily learned yesterday that Borja took his oath of office before Duterte and Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III in Malacañang this Aug. 13.

Borja said his appointment carries with it a “big challenge.”

Early this month, Borja filed on behalf of ALU-TUCP, the union’s wage-increase petition to increase the minimum daily wage in the region by P320. If ALU-TUCP succeeds, the minimum wage in the region will be P658 a day.
