ILIGAN City — The Polio case reported in Lanao del Sur recently have alerted officials here and in Northern Mindanao as it became the focus of the discussion during a health summit held here Tuesday.

Speakers led by Mayor Celso Regencia dealt on cleaning the surroundings and exerting efforts to attain Zero Outdoor Defecation (ZOD).

Regencia urged all barangay officials especially barangay captains to clean up their respective areas in compliance to an Executive Memorandum being implemented by DILG.

He said that non-compliance could be a basis for dismissal of a barangay chairperson.

On a similar vien, City DILG Director Edward Bhagwani echoed Regencia on the importance of maintaining cleanliness in the barangays.

Dr.  Evelyn Magsayo, OIC-Local Health Support Division of DOH-Region 10 emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness to remove breeding places of mosquitoes.

She also asked the cooperation of everybody in attaining ZOD as polio has been known to be carried by flies that alight on human feces and carry the virus when they stepped on food.

Other speakers like City Health Officer Dr. Cherlina Canaveral, Dr. Jovette S. Guinal, DMO V, DOH 10 and Engineer Jeffrey Elogsong, ZOD Speaker of DOH Region 10 dealt on Cleanliness as the most effective disease prevention measure.

Towards the end of the summit barangays Villa Verde and Santo Rosario were awarded for being the only barangays of the 44 in the City that have attained ZOD.
