THE City Council during its regular session Monday adopted a resolution earnestly requesting the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) to push for the bidding of the design and implementation of the Urban Renewal Development Plan of Metropolitan Cagayan de Oro.

Among the catalytic projects to be implemented include the Privatization of the Agus Hydro Electric and Pulangi Power Plants that is expected to resolve the problem of high electricity rates in the region. Also included is the Nurturing our Waters Program specifically the creation of the master plan for the seven major water basins in Mindanao including the Tagoloan and Cagayan de Oro River Basins.

Likewise to be initiated are the Conduct of Urban Regional Planning for National Disaster Preventive Response to Climate Change in Cagayan de Oro City, Iponan Flood Control Project, and   Upgrading of Laguindingan International Airport,  among others.

MinDA also coordinated and facilitated the budget inclusion for Mindanao Budget Advocacy for funding the conduct of feasibility studies of several Mindanao Metropolis including Cagayan de Oro, Metro Zamboanga, and GenSan Metropolis starting 2019.

Though considered as the food basket in the Philippines wherein it supplies over 40 percent of the country’s food requirements and contributes to more than 30 percent of the national food trade, Mindanao receives only 12% of the total national budget. Now is the proper time that Mindanao seeks to acquire a bigger budget to be able to meet the challenges of an uplifted quality of life envisioned for the coming years from 2019 to 2022. This can be done only through good governance, stable peace and security, robust economy, innovations, enabling conditions, Green Mindanao and human development and social cohesion, he suggested.

The legislation was endorsed by the committee on planning and development chaired by Councilor Ian Mark Q. Nacaya. (sp)
