Holy week has just ended and we’re almost done with our first month of summer. Escapades here and there are posted online, but for the rest of us who are stuck in the bustling city; don’t fret because this isn’t the end game yet. There are better days ahead! Here are 4 things I’ve learned from going about destinations during peak season:

1. The Lines – The queues for transportation, accommodation walk in, or waiting even for your meal might have a significant number of people lining up. Be prepared to wait in the receiving area or call in advance the hotel/accommodation to secure your booking. Have your meals sent directly to your room if possible, if not, go early. The wise tourist catches the warm bed and early food.

2. Pick Wisely – You can’t really bask in the ambience of the place you’re in because of the crowd. I find it unwise to travel spontaneously. With an influx of tourists to so called mainstream destinations ( tourist attractions that are always posted on social media platforms), I prefer to pick out the lesser known ones. They may be the paths less travelled but if you’re after rest and a good getaway, might as well choose the places that are lesser known but slowly getting attention. Research!

3. A lot of people do it for the gram – This has seriously gotten into the heads of some travellers that to my opinion has created a mentality to go where “influencers” have been. Travel for yourself, don’t be among these populace of would be weekend adventurists that all they want is a photograph that they were there. Travel to understand, to seek purpose, and to recharge. But if you can’t just contain the child like giddy euphoria of being on an exotic spot with your OOTD and want to share it to the online sphere, well it’s just like they say: different strokes for different folks.

4. Post it after – For security reasons, I’ve learned that its best we post our travels online a few days after (Not unless you’re on assignment for publications). Not to sound like a buzz kill but it’s for good reason. If you have a public social media account, post photos with your gadgets (or mention them), and show your followers where you are at the moment, always double check the security of your house and yourself. Yes, your home may just be a target for thieves when you’re away. Be travel savvy, but be security conscious. You won’t enjoy your getaway if you don’t have any peace of mind.

Maybe I’m an old soul, wherein I could define travelling as a means to better understand myself, the world, and to find my purpose. Enjoy the company and the process. Travel and quench the curiosity in you, but travel wisely.
