A communist guerrilla was killed after a 30-minute gunfight between the New People’s Army and government troops in Sitio Puyawon, Barangay Mahanub, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte earlier this week.
In a report to Gen. Franco Nemesio Gacal, commander of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division based here in the city, soldiers from the 30th Infantry Battalion were conducting military operations in the area when they encountered a group of rebels at 10 am, Tuesday.
Gacal said they have yet to identify the slain rebel.
The soldiers recovered the dead body at the site of the encounter and the rebel’s M16 rifle, magazine, one anti-personnel mine, one blasting cap, five meters of electrical wire, utility rope, and other personal belongings.
“We are saddened that another NPA who is an IP member died due to the wrong indoctrinations made by the terrorist NPA. It is really unfortunate that the CPP-NPA continuously recruit, deceive, and exploit our IP brothers. This must be stopped,” Gacal said.
