GENERAL Santos City – The provincial government of South Cotabato has linked up with the National Dairy Authority (NDA) for the upgrading starting this year of the province’s dairy stocks.

Dr. Raul Teves, South Cotabato Animal Production and Processing Center chief, said the local government has availed of the NDA’s animal loan program to facilitate the implementation of an extensive genetic improvement program for farm-based dairy animals in the area.

He said they are currently working for the release of an initial P500,000 grant from the agency to set off the program’s roll out.

The funds will be utilized by the provincial government, through the Provincial Veterinary Office, to buy back the breeder cows that it distributed to local farmers several years ago, he said.

“We’re targeting to cover around 2,000 large animals for artificial insemination this year,” he said.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan or provincial board earlier passed a resolution that authorized South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance-Fuentes to forge an agreement with the NDA in connection with its animal loan program.

NDA is a government-owned and controlled corporation attached to the Department of Agriculture.

Under the agreement, the agency will provide a P500,000 “buy back fund” to the local government that will be used for the procurement of upgraded dairy animals and local dairy crossbreds. pna
